Siberian Hamster less active?

recently my hamster has been less active and has been staying in his little cosy corner all day and night most nights hes running all over the place but now hes just curling up into a ball when i attempted to put it in the ball it started to screech and wasn't very happy. also its quite old is it a sign that it will be dieing soon? :(
