Should I lower the thermostat if I want in to be colder in my house? Or raise it?

I have this thermostat that I has a on that ca be set to heat or cold, another on for auto or fan. I have it set on cold and auto (because I want it to be cold it's crazy HOT here in Texas). My problem is that I don't know what degrees is my thermostat suppose to be on. Normally I think it's like a thermo/ farenheit way where if you raise the degrees like 80, you want it to be hot and if you lower it to 60, you want it to be cold (the basic old weather channel way). But others disagree and say that lowering it, makes it hotter. So what do I do? :(
